Considering the rumors about
your behavior throughout fandom,
JD/KaizouSeizo, I can’t say that your post is out of character. It doesn’t surprise me that you would be in favor of allowing only one group to offer scanlations.
Why should that thread remain closed? I believe this forum was founded to unite Conan fans. The spirit of English Manga Scans? For goodness sake, it’s a thread that allows the users of this board to find English translations of the scans they want. If there are two, three or even four options, why should that matter to anyone? It’s ridiculous to assume that members of the fandom cannot decide between a set of scans.
First off: Thank you for acknowledging Magic’s attempts to exaggerate my past issues with others as perpetuated rumors and not factual accounts of the past. I appreciate the thought, but on with the post.
You speak as if my post was based on “rumors” of Magic’s behavior,
magicaldreams—oh no, it’s based completely in personal experience. I can offer four examples offhand where she has attempted to gain other’s sympathy in regards to her personal conflicts (such as, for example, the one with Knightus). If you should like me to divulge those (in PM or otherwise), I can do so. I say this freely simply because I have logs from several occasions and am not afraid to make them known should I be forced to.
Where would you get rumors about me, again? From Magic, I’d presume? That sounds like a perfectly neutral source, if I may be so bold. Anyone who has worked on Conan in as many different positions and groups as I have is going to have opposition regardless of whether it’s warranted or not. I, obviously, am not oblivious to the idea that I am far from a perfect individual. If you ever see me speaking in my IRC channel, you will constantly see me criticizing my own work from the past and ideas we came up with that didn’t quite work—and even past conflicts that could have easily been averted. So, no, I’m not perfect, but it’s great to know I have people who don’t like me despite only knowing of me through indirect contact. Hopefully this intentionally adversarial response will solidify that position for you.
By saying the thread “allows the users of this board to find English translations of the scans they want,” you are essentially saying that every file is represented. In fact, Magic resurrected the thread that had not been used since
August—of 2006, and basically jumped from volume 56 to volume 61. Instead of making available all files to bridge the gap in the revival of the topic, Magic only offered her new files from volume 61. I think we both know exactly what the incentive is there. Personally, I really don’t mind what the deal is or who does what scan that’s posted where, but being so openly biased about it is simply implying that other’s contributions and work mean nothing.
If you will recall, the anime community has come a long way in the past three years. We are now only 180 episodes from having varying versions of every single aired episode. That’s fairly remarkable, considering how long it takes to subtitle and release an anime. I don’t expect you to be familiar with the process, but I can positively assure you that it generally takes in excess of twelve hours to produce one episode. If we say it takes twelve hours an episode (though it occasionally takes much more), that’s 2160 hours total. If we worked every single day for twelve hours, and by “we” I mean the Conan fansubbing community, it would take us 90 days. If we only put in twelve hours every other day, that’s 180 days. I think you can see where that’s going.
That is why I don’t like oversubbing.
To outside people who have never fansubbed an entire episode, it seems perfectly logical that no one would mind having multiple versions of the same episode (or movie, for that matter). I have absolutely no issue with recreating episodes or movies when they are far passed and can be easily corrected with more modern techniques—such as with the Neg version of movie 3, or episodes 132-134, 118, etc. That makes sense, but what about a week after the episode airs? That doesn’t make sense when those people could be doing one of the other 180 episodes that are currently not available.
That is why I have been stressing for years that we need to work together to finish it and I can say that, of the 314 total subbed, I managed over
100 of them. Call me jaded, but I don’t like to say working on the fansubs is particularly “fun.” Then, why do I do it? “The work is its own reward,” as Holmes said. So long as people want Conan, I will try my best to get it to them with the tools I have available.
After having spent so much time over the past few years on countless nights I could have been sleeping or just out with friends to bring the show to people, it really is hard for me to conceive that people like you believe our time is something to be wasted. If we were caught up on all 492 episodes, I would have absolutely no issue with people competing over the newly aired episodes, as that’s a mentality I can understand. I never once said I would have Magic done away with here, I’ve just made it very clear she has absolutely shown me nothing in the past month plus that makes me believe she’s doing the series for the right reasons. This is the point where I could call to question Magic’s motives for founding the “BlackOrg,” which I have quotes from her and fellow staff members Light- and Kaitoukidsama explicitly saying that it was founded out of spite for me. The four founding members of the group were basically anti-fans of mine. That sounds like a great motive to me—how about you?
By the way, I’m actually quite familiar with the concept, which is exactly why I stray from it as much as possible. I offer joints constantly and have absolutely no issue with other groups doing their own episodes. Ask Jossy at HnI and Ramon at ANFS who has always offered to help them, even when he didn’t have to. I work with rajhaziel at Neg constantly. Not that it bears mentioning, but I did all of my work for HnI’s early episodes completely unaccredited—no “Brought to you by KaizouFansubs.net” logo scrawling across the screen. I simply wanted to help them learn some of the techniques we’ve come up with over the years—not promote myself.
I already gave you completely viable reasons above for this, so I won’t enunciate those points again here.
I actually do know Magic quite well, though, believe it or not. I once thought we were fairly good friends, but she—out of nowhere and completely unprovoked—made it clear to me that we were “not friends,” despite not ever having any sort of conflict in the past. Quick judge, I’d say. If I talked to Knightus nearly as much as you are insinuating I do, then I likely wouldn’t feel there was anything to add to this topic to change people’s minds. I know that candyland is a separate person, obviously. That is why I said that Magic only “dictated” her post. Magic clearly didn’t have the courage to post it herself.
I’m afraid to report that you’re operating on the assumption that Knightus is my sister and we simply cannot go a day without reporting to our woes to one another. Truth is: Magic has given me enough reason to post here simply from the aberrant behavior and lack of dignity she has exhibited in the past few days.
As I said above, I don’t even try to hide the fact that I strongly frown upon oversubbing. There is too much left to subtitle for us to sit around and do the same episodes for no reason. If anyone wants an upcoming case that is clearly on DCTP’s agenda, they know where to find me and they have. I will give them my word we’ll not do the case should they demonstrate they are of considerable integrity. Unfortunately, Magic isn’t among those I would trust. Jossy and rajhaziel are, however (given that Ramon recently quit fansubbing Conan). It’s quite clear Magic is your only source for your argument, so I suggest you interview others or contact me personally (again, not hard to find) if you actually want to talk about my character.
Let’s not even get near the word “honesty” in places where Magic could possibly find herself.
People have hacked my website and webservers in the past as well, so I can’t particularly say that’s something new. Someone deleted our entire FTP before, costing us eight episode translations and their accompanying timed scripts, thirty DVD VOBs, and all of our Lupin 2006 special work.
No, it does not mean that, which is one of few points we agree on. I believe, ultimately, Knightus and Magic should do their scans together as they did in the past and allow anyone else that wants to help to help. Magic was obviously promoting herself in the thread, so let’s not even go into that. Read what I said above if you somehow missed it.
I’ve worked with hundreds of other fansubbers, in fact. That’s a little more difficult than using PaintShopPro or Photoshop, I believe.
Again, source, please. I’ve worked with a number of people and continue to this day (of which Magic has never been one of), so I really don’t know who you’re talking about.
“If you are willing to admit faults, you have one less fault to admit.”
I have a long list of them. PDF’s available.
It
is a concern of mine, though, considering Magic’s little foray into the anime community with episode 490 was a waste of everyone’s time involved. I can’t say I expected anything less of her, to be frank. I personally went to her to make it clear we were almost done with it and they shouldn’t operate under the assumption that we are just sitting around doing nothing. These aren’t two-hour play-pen projects—if we are going to do something, we’re going to do it the right way… Not use an HK script for a movie and pass it off as the complete opposite. For a group founded out of spite for me, they sure have some amusing priorities.
Explain why magic jumped all those volumes to post her latest works, please. By not doing so, you would be avoiding the point entirely. I don’t see what the problem is in not wasting resources, as you just proclaimed. It seems to me that that is a perfectly legitimate argument to everything you’ve posted. I really don’t have anything to say about the manga community other than: without Knightus’ Conan linker, we wouldn’t be here today and we would be far worse off.
Well, you seem like a big girl, so start investigating claims aside from taking them from jaded third-hand sources. Unlike you with me, I have experienced Magic firsthand.
That's quite obvious, but I thank you for making that clear. You have another agenda with the post. I would not doubt in the least that you're one of Magic's close friends. Where are the outside supporters here? Likely keeping to themselves, which I do envy them for.
Actually, yes, there is. She is deceitful, manipulating, and overall undeniably gluttonous in all of her affairs. I guess she neglected to tell you about the time she simply went around slandering me and saying we were, and I quote, “not friends” for no reason known to me. We had had no prior confrontation to her saying that, and I am still perplexed by it. Again, if you want proof, I have the complete logs to the entire conversation that was shared with me. You would likely be as shocked as I was, but then again, it seems you know her personally, so maybe not. While I’m sure I’ve been portrayed as Moriarty, I can assure you now that I have no reservation in regards to exposing crude opportunists such as your dear Magicbulletgirl.
The reason that post appears to be “condescending” is simply because Magic has exhibited such a lack of humility that I am forced to respond in such a manner. Anyone who would behave in such a way isn’t worth many people’s time.
Believe it or not, you and I are very much alike. Similar grammar practices and sentence formatting aside, our thoughts are completely parallel. They are not the same—they are exact opposites. W-Wait, stop right there… I think you’re judging me, aren’t you? I thought so.
I saved most of the personal material for now. Since you’ve only been told about my fansubbing career, I’ll let you in on a little more information. You should know that I actually think most manga and anime are redundant exercises in exploitation and fanatic approaches to realism. I am a fan of three anime: Conan, Death Note, and Major. Everything else I have come across is simply far beyond what I would even remotely consider “entertainment.”
I come from a world where we try to do things for others when we can (fansubbing, scanlating) and not to do it in order to race. If racing to do these activities is enjoyable for anyone, I highly suggest they subscribe to reality. When I feel like I’m no longer helping others enjoy one of my favorite series on any medium, then I’ll be done with it. I want to help others enjoy the series that others helped me become familiar with. I highly respect Kudo-kun, the founder of Anime-Conan. I also highly respect Teppei, KazeKun (though we had major issues in the past), rajhaziel, Okita, Knightus, silversurfer, John_Wang, Akamaru, DarkbearX, mirashii, Gourry, Akai, Icee, Fruits, and countless, countless others. I can’t even begin to name all of the people I have much respect for, who sacrificed their own time in order to bring the show to others.
Someone like KazeKun started out so well, but was eventually led astray, which is unfortunate. He’s the prime example of what can happen when vast opportunity seizes one’s rationale and causes them to try to dominate every series they could think of. That, however, does not prevent me from respecting his huge contribution to the anime community. Due to the hundreds of e-mails we have received at Kaizou, I can safely say I am glad to have been a part of bringing my favorite show to the fans. Someday, more fans will rise up and make sure all of the past work wasn’t put to waste.
My respect for those people that brought the series to me is why I don’t like oversubbing or overscanlating. That is why I don’t approve of wasting time. If you want to argue that, then it’s time for round two… But first, you need to get your facts sorted out and gathered from a variety of sources rather than someone close to you.
EDIT: Honestly, are you kidding me? You're her
sister? L.O.L. I honestly was beginning to think maybe you were just someone who... wasn't her BFF... but now it's a blood thing. I hear ya'.
