I think one of the most important things in a story is its character(s). If you're going to use a character that's not your own, make sure they stick to their original personality and respond to situations according to that. If you are introducing a new character, make sure you allow time for some development. This applies especially if you want to show strong intermit relationships forming between your character and one that you're using, don't rush if you can help it. That doesn't neccarily mean focus on them all together throughout the fanfic, infact just the opposite. Give your character a roll, don't let them steal the show and add a little depth if it's at all possible. The last thing you want is for your creation to be susceptible to being branded with the dreaded Mary Sue stereotype. Well, happy writing!
