There are a couple of things I look for in any and every fanfic I am prepared to finish reading. Those things are:
1) Spelling. Badly spelled words really distract me a lot (though an intentional mis-spelling can be okay...)
2) A hook : something that catches a reader's interest at the very beginning of the story and doesn't let go till the story's done...
Which things do you all consider essential ingredients of fanfics?

What you mentioned plus:
1) Fanfics written like movie manuscripts (that's really disturbing) 2) If the writer has write about a cliché like "Conan becomes Shinichi again/Reveals his identity/Brings down the men in black" (I know you weren't talking just about DC fanfics, but) he/she at least has to take an original approach to it. 3) A plus is if the author did some background research on the subject dealt with.
Why are you asking?

What happend to me was that
1. If you are going to do crossovers....Please unless you have time do research on the characters: Like how will the character will interact with each other.
Example: Sango from Inuyasha and the Characters from Detective Conan; Conan/Shinichi: At first beacuse of his seemingly young age. She'll have same sisterly feelings as Ran..If she finds out who he is, she maybe see a paralle between Ran and Shinichi and her and Her Brother. (If you have seen the anime)
Ran: She'll have some comman ground with her and maybe help her out.
Sonoko; At first she may find her annoying.
Something like that....
2. If a movie inspires you to make a fanfic make it clear...like: Case closed Solid: Inspired by Metal Gear Solid Or Detecitve Conan: Stand Alone Complex: Inspired by Ghost in the shell.
3. Make you story stand out. (Personlly I hate fanfics about Shinchi came back and he takes down the black org.) Make it original..or make it stand out.

Kentaru: Oh, just curious, I guess. I know what *I* look for in fanfics, but I don't know what others do...

Tive: Yes.... taste differs from person to person ( but I wouldn't think thats the case with fanfics) Did/do you write any fanfics Btw.?

Kentaru: yeah, but only 2... I've thought that a lot of fanfics don't really tell the truth about characters, and I've tried to give "the truth" as I think they'd see it, from both the eyes of Ran, and also from Haibara's POV... Anyway, those stories are under the pen name "tively-split" at fanfiction.net ... I'd like to also write a story from Conan/Shinichi's POV, but to do it right I'd have to re-read a lot of D.C. scanlations, and well, it's kind of hard for me to motivate myself to do so...

I absolutely avoid: Crossovers, unless I find it strange enough to look at (Yugioh and Kaito per example), and no OOC's/Mary sue's... augh... I really hate when people take OOC people and make them main characters in fan fictions

I'm not a huge fan of cross over fanfics, but I've come across a few that I liked... A Ranma/oh my goddess one that was pretty good, IIRC
@zatoi: I've taken a first glance at the first parts of both of those fanfics you posted links to, but... There's a lot of spelling mistakes in 'em, and I really hate that kind of thing... I *know* that ff.net gives a person an option to spelling check chapters, did that not work for you or something? Anyway, it's not up to me to dictate to you (or anyone else for that matter) what they should do, but I think you'll greatly increase the potential audience pool of your fanfics if you spend time getting them as correctly spelled as possible... (That was even a requirement for the fanfic contest I wrote that Ai-fanfic for, and I didn't consider that to be an unreasonable demand...)

zatoi: I suggest a beta, then. Someone who will, at the very least, run your fic through Word and fix the spelling. Maybe some grammer too, if you have troubles with that. Beta's are the greatest; mine doesn't get to check for much though, sense I haven't sent her anything in awhile. She's awesome, though.
