Thought I'd post it here... just a small prologue for my first DC story...
The footsteps echoed clearly through the empty, dark alley. Through a window, a clock showed the time: it was past midnight. The steps followed each other quickly. He was running. Running as fast as he could. Running as if his life depended on it... no if Ran's life depended on it. His eyes... his eyes showed fright... fright beyond measure.
"Ran! No!"
He reached the corner of the alley. Turned right. There was enough light to show who this person was. A man. His black hair almost vanished in the black, dark sky behind him. Black!
"Please, Ran! Let this be a joke! Just a prank!"
But he knew it wasn't! He was almost there! There was it... He looked at the windows. No sign of life. All was dark inside. He panted... panted like heck. But he couldn't stop... not after he knew what was going on. He went up the stairs. Before he reached the last step, he fished a bunch of keys out of his left trousers pocket. He reached the door. Where is that darn key!
"Found it!"
A "click" was the result. He pushed the door open and ran into the apartment.
"Ran! Please, be alright!"
He ran towards Ran's bedroom, leaving the door behind him open. A musquito saw the inviting opening and flew in.
He opened the bedroom-door... looked into the room... There she was... For a second, relief came over the man. Next, utter shock.
"Ran! NO! WHAT DID THEY...!"
The man knelt down at an 8-year old girl. He shook her, trying to wake her up.
"RAN!"
Utter desperation sounded in his voice.
"RAN! WAKE UP!"
Another door opened in the apartment.
"RAN!"
Footsteps sounded outside of the room. Footsteps that were quickly coming near.
"RAAAAAN!" he yelled with all the power he got. A tear began to form itself in the corner of his right eye.
A little boy appeared in the opening of the bedroom door.
"What happ..."
He stopped in the middle of his sentence. He could not believe his eyes.
"RAN! WAKE UP!" the man yelled again.
Did her hand move a little? Both noticed. A moan came from the small girl's mouth.
"RAN!" the man now yelled. Happiness was the emotion behind the yell this time. Happiness... but for how long?
The 8-year old girl opened her eyes for a moment. They shut immediately. They again opened.
"D-dad!" she said weakly.
"What happened?" the boy yelled loudly.
"I... I... I don't remember..."
There was a moment of silence.
"There was a... woman," was the next she brought out. It was visibly taking her a lot of effort to talk. She was exhausted, even though she had been unconscious for a whole while.
"There was a gun... a shot... sleepiness... I blacked out..."
"A tranquilizer," both the boy and the man concluded in their minds.
"W-what happened? Why are you so..."
...big. She realized. She lifted her hands and stared at them.
"Small... smaller... smaller than they used to be!"
She turned her head downwards...
"M-my body! It's... small!"
"Dad! Conan-kun! W-what's happening!"
Confusion mixed with desperation sounded in those two sentences... she almost yelled.
"I... I dunno..." the man said.
"I do..." the boy named Conan said. The moonlight reflected on his glasses, giving them white shades. His head was slightly turned towards the wooden floor. The man turned around, surprised by these words.
"I do... Ran!" Conan repeated those words, adding the girl's name to the sentence after a second.
