My first fanfic, I hope you'll enjoy reading it as much as I did writing it .
Even though he was one of the best detectives in Japan and was named “Sleeping Kogoro” for literally solving the hardest cases in sleep, Kogoro Mouri hasn’t had a client in 3 months.
His dynamic life filled with cases slowly turned into the monotony of his four walls. Not that he didn’t like it…
All that he was doing the whole day was reading the newspaper, drinking beer, eating and sometimes play a game of Mahjong in the evenings.
The problem was that Kogoro’s bank account wasn’t looking so good and his last yen were burning a hole in his pocket and this combined with his gamble addiction meant no good…
“Damn” he shouted from the top of his lungs and slammed the newspaper on the table.
“No! No! No! I can’t believe it!” he cried again, but this time the anger was replaced by disappointment and frustration.
He picked up the newspaper again to recheck but the horse race results didn’t magically change.
The horse he put 5000000 yen on hasn’t won, in-fact it came last.
He took a look at his working-desk which was full of empty, crushed beer cans, trying to find his keys, but they weren’t there.
He started to search at the logic places first: under the desk, on the floor, behind the sofa, on his night table, in his jacket… No luck. Then he started to look in the fridge, in the microwave, in the oven, in the sink, even in the toilet.
No luck again.
Suddenly he heard rattling coming from the office/living room.
“You stupid cat, MY keys are not YOUR toy” he shouted as he walked into his office and saw Goro, his wife’s cat playing around with his keys. He approached the cat slowly but his anger was visible because of the pulsing blood vein on his forehead. “Come on Goro… Give me the keys, I need my morning coffee at the Poirot…” he said with a fake smile on his face.
However the smart cat decided to provoke Kogoro on one of the worst days in his life and sprang on the sofa. Kogoro chased after, following Goro through the kitchen to the hallway and finally cornered the cat at the front door.
“Little brat… I’m returning you to the old witch first thing in the morning” he said as he took the keys from Goro’s mouth. He walked to the living room and took his jacket.
He was desperate to finally sit down at the Poirot and have a cup of coffee. As he was about to lock the door and walk out of the office as an envelope sticking out of the mailbox caught his eye. “Only for the eyes of Kogoro Mouri” he read out loud.
“I knew it! I knew that there must be something good about today” he thought as he tore up the letter from the potential client.
Dear Mr. Kogoro Mouri
I would really need the help of a detective because of my current situation and since your detective skills are very renowned I chose you.
I can’t give you all the details of the manner via this letter so I invite you and a person of your choice to be my guests on my cruise ship.
I am including the first half of your payment to this letter, and the other half upon completing the job.
The “Oceanus” will take off on the 5th May at 17:00 pm.
Kogoro forgot everything what the letter said besides “I am including the first half of your payment to this letter”…
He looked into the envelope and there it was.
A 50 million yen check!
Kogoro carefully counted the zeros three times and pinched himself to make sure he wasn’t dreaming.
He stood there watching the beautiful number on the check for five minutes.
Then he came back to reality and started to think about the case.
“Ryou Ishikawa… This name is so familiar to me…Where did I hear it?” he talked to himself. “Well Ishikawa is a quite common surname so that must be it…” he thought as he walked back to the office. The smell of money made him forget everything including his “hard earned” coffee at the Poirot.
“What does that Ishikawa guy want for me to investigate?” he asked himself. “He surely must be very rich or very desperate, probably both…”
Upon entering his office, he threw the jacket on the sofa and sat down at his working desk.
Soon he started daydreaming on how to spend the money. They mostly included vacations to exotic places, fast cars and Yokou-chan.
But he was interrupted by something warm and soft purring next to his foot – Goro-chan. He looked down at the cat and smiled. “You see this?” he said pointing to the check. “This my dear Goro is a 50 million check!”. “You can now do whatever you want, I don’t care!” he explained to the cat like it was a human being. He would have carried on with the speeches to the cat if the door didn’t open.
“I am home!” a child’s voice happily said.
Kogoro didn’t answer, he just smiled at the boy.
“Uncle Kogoro you seem happy, is something wrong ?” Conan sarcastically said referring to Kogoro’s depressed mood in the last couple of days.
“No… Everything is JUST perfect” Kogoro replied waving with the check and envelope.
“What’s this, a new case?” Conan asked in excitement.
“Take a look yourself.” Mouri-kun said. Conan grabbed the check first but Kogoro pulled his hand back. “No, no… 50 million yen checks aren’t for children”
“What?” asked Conan.
“You heard me, 50 million for one case in advance, here is the letter from the client, take a look.”
Conan took the letter and sat on the sofa. Kogoro didn’t take his eyes full of sheer happiness off the boy while he was reading the letter.
When Conan finished the letter and looked back Kogoro’s smile grew even bigger.
“Uncle Kogoro? It’s says here that you can take only one person with you…”
“Oh yes, that’s my favourite part, finally a case where I get a insane amount of money without little know-it-all brats that bother me.”
Kogoro’s words didn’t surprise Conan, he expected that Mouri would not take the little brat that touches corpses and talks funny stuff to the officers along with him on this insanely overpaid case.
His words didn’t surprise him, but they sure made him a little bit depressed.
Three long months without the thrill of solving cases and then when finally one comes he can’t join the investigations.
He didn’t say anything to Kogoro, he just sat there.
His face had that dreamy, thinker expression, like every time he was doing some heavy brain-work.
Then he suddenly sprang up and reread the letter. “Ryou Ishikawa…” he said quietly.
“That can mean only one thing.” he thought as he put on his jacket and sneakers. “I’m going to the professors house, I’ll be back soon” he shouted to Kogoro and slammed the door.
“I need to find a way to get on this ship… That old guy will never make it on his own” he thought as he walked to professor Agasa’s house.
