Since I have a problem right now, I thought some people here would like to have a help thread for their English homework.
I hope it's okay to open a Thread like that, if not, please delete it ^^°
Okay, here is my problem: I need to do a report for my English class about slavery and black movement in America and personally have no idea of what to do there. So I thought, since many of you are from America, someone could help my by giving links or telling me the most important stuff. I think most of you had that in history lessons... Every help is appreciated ^^° I'm sorry to bother you
Thanks in advance Kazuha

I had a project about that once. You mean the 60's where Black people were not seen as humans as so, and slavery with black people, don't you?

If it's really about the 60's: We did a wee bit about this in the Leistungskurs, but if, as it seems to me, it's about 100 years earlier, I'm not gonna be of any help. Waiting for confirmation.

Kazuha, how long is your report going to be? Its tough sorting through Kentaru's articles... and boring too. so heres some basic facts: -African slavery has been going on for many centuries, first in Europe, then in the Americas. -Abraham did not free the slaves, after the Civil War, slavery was still going on. -Many slaves tried to escape by using the Underground Railroad, a chain of acquaintances that work to smuggle them up north to areas better protected by law. Harriet Tubman can be a subtopic) Many slaves tried to escape to Canada. -The Ku Klux Klan was formed by radical white men who wanted to get rid of people of color from America, to a point where they would lynch (kill) them. -African-Americans were paid less and given harsher conditions in workplaces. -Many resorted to the "Ghetto", where they live in clusters, forming a neighborhood of a common culture. -Rosa Parks and Martin Luther King Jr. led a few major movements in the late 1950s and early 1960s. Martin Luther King Jr. was a preacher, not an activist, Rosa Parks used him to get the ideas across to people, that humans are equal in every way, and that there shouldnt be prejudice against people of any race. -MLK Jr. was famous for his "I have a dream" speech. -The African-Americans led protests were stopped by the police force, sometimes beaten and water-hosed. -Even now there is prejudice in the American society, why dont we put our race or gender on our resumés when we look for jobs? thats why. ... well I know the list is FAR from adequate, but I just wanted to bring up little bits of information that can all be stretched into an essay/report. So take you pick, and I suggest writing about one thing, unless you are asked to do a generalization of the events... in which case you have nothing to worry about. Hope that helped,

Wow, thank you a lot! I didn't expect so much post ^^° Thank you! Okay, the report should be about 30 minutes and I need stuff to show the other students, like pictures or movies or stuff... -.- but that's not your problem XD Okay, my teacher said, I should mainly talk about the black movement and not about the slavery, because we had that topic once a little bit (though I can't remember) And in which time this was... I dunno... Thank you a lot Mic, with your notes I can try to find a little more! And thanks kentaru for naming the most important people

I also have a problem!! ...with my german pronounciation. I'm supposed to be singing Mozart's "Abendempfindung an Laura", except the text is in German, and I dont know the basic rules to pronounciate German 0_o um so here's the text... can someone word it out how its pronounced? (for example: in english, for the word "apple", you translate it into: "aaPOL" capitalize the stressed syllabol...) Werd't ihr dann an mei nem Gra be wei nen, trau ernd mei ne A sche sehn, dann, o Freun de, will ich euch er scheinen und will him mel auf euch weh'n. Schenk'auch de ein Thrán chen mir, und pflúcke mir ein Veilchen auf mein Grab, und mit dei nem see len vol len Blicke sieh' dann sanft auf mich her ab. Weih' mir ei ne Thrá ne, und ach! scháme dich nur nicht, sie mir zu weih'n, o sie wird in mei nem Di a de me dann die schón ste Per le sein. Note: I copied it word for word from a sheet music, so that words are broken up...also ú=u with two dots on it, I dont know the hotkey for that. sorry.so if anyone has that extra time on their hands... would you mind giving me either a lesson on German pronounciation, or translate those words into Sound-o-grams? you would get praises from me like none you've heard before.

you mean the prononciation only? A is like the japanese a. O is like a japanese too and so is e and i. "ch" ist not like japanese is reminds a bit of... err.. I can't explain. Hard to explain, make Kazu-chan do it o.o

for pronounciation, pretty much like japanese indeed, ch=h as in "high", just dont make it "r "k" that doesn't sound like it should at all(if you know russian/greek x or czech ch:that's the exact sound). Sch=SH ß=sz ä=I am ö=early ü= if you don't know French u, or the Slav's y/ы, like interesting. Yu is all wrong. v=f w=v z=tz Mostly, the first sillable is the stressed one
If that doesn't help, let your pc read the text below, it will vaguely resemble what it should sound like.
Baald feel lahhht meer vehht, vee vestvind lie sa, einay shtillay Ahnoong tzu, shlieszlihhh deesess Labens Peelgarrasa, fleega in daas Laand der Roo'.
vertt eer daann an manam Graaba vanan, traw arnd mana Asha san, daann, o Froynda, vill ehhh oyhhh arshinan oond vill himmel awf oyhhh veh'n.
Shank'awhhh doo an Tranhhan meer, oond pflicke meer an falhhhan awf man Graba, oond mit danam salanfollam Blicka see' daann saanft awf meehhh heraab.
vaaee meer ana trana, oond ahhh! shama dihh noor neehhht, see meer tzoo vaahan, oh see vird in manam Deeaadama daann dee schansta Parla saaeen.

Some little tidbits: -Ghetto was formerly a term used in Germany to describe the neighborhood where the Jews were forced to live in by the Nazi's. - Malcolm X was also an African-American's rights activist. Much like Martain Luther King Jr. but said that violence was sometimes necessary to achieve what you wanted ((Or something to that extent)) -In the deep south ((pretty much the state of Virginia down)) people of color were especially discriminated against. I know that they had separate bathrooms, water fountains, stores, schools, and neighbrorhoods for whites and other races. -African-Americans were able to vote before women ((pretty much all races were, except I'm not sure about Indian-Americans)) -There was this church for blacks that the KKK blew up, killing, I think, four girls. Although I might be wrong about that. I would think it would be more. -Don't forget to write about Martain Luther King Jr.'s "I have a Dream" speech, the boycott of the busses in...Missouri?((Or Alabama...somewhere around there)), Rosa Parks refusal to give up her seat, and the long, peaceful marches across states protesting racism. - BLACK POWER!That's all I can think about right now. Most of the stuff is half remembered from all the grades I've studied the Civil War and stuff...Although you could mention about the Brown vs. Board of Education ((something like that)). Ugh, I'm brain dead today ((fever: 101 degrees)) so I would cite everything I told you. EDIT: Oh, and the Civil War was not all about freeing the slaves. Do you think Lincoln would go to war over what was considered "property"? Lincoln was willing to let the southerners keep their slaves if they would stay in the Union. It was more how the South was feeling threatened by industrialism in the North and...God...can't think right now. Just look up the 5 S's or I'll try to post them tomarrow. God, I think I'm gonna puke...Good bye everyone.

Wow Tui, thanks a lot, but you don't have to type up anymore. With that last information I finished the report! Thank you all so much! that's a great guide, I'll use this for my summary (need to do it a little later than the report itself) Only one more thing would be great: What can I say about the "I have a Dream" speech? I mean, I have it and I can read it out, but personally, I can't think of describing it, or what it makes so special... sorry, I'm stupid ^^° Thank you so much, all of you And I hope you'll get better soon, Tui ^^

Weeell, from what I understand, Martain Luther King Jr.'s speech was about his dream that one day all people of all races, sex, and age could live together without racism, prejudices, and other forms of discrimination. I haven't actually read the whole thing ((I only know up to the " all the little children...)) line.
