Besides Detective Conan and Detective School Q.
I was watching a commercial for Conan and it said, "The most popular detective anime of all time." So what are the other, not so popular ones, then? Might be interesting...

Mythical Detective Loki Ragnarok and Death Note come to mind.

That would imply that DCs rating is higher overall than of the following series that preceded it. That includes the series Fruits and Misztina mentioned and:
Detective Kindaichi, Agatha Christie no Meitantei Poirot to Marple, Meitantei Holmes (Miyazaki and Takahata worked on that), Paranoia Agent (Satoshi Kon), Clamp High school Detectives, Tantei Gakuen, You're Under Arrest, When They Cry - Higurashi, Cowboy Beebop, City Hunter and Master Keaton.
I don't have the TV ratings of each of these series and I'm not even sure if each and every one of them can be classified as a detective story.

there's that one anime i've heard of called "detective academy"--not quite sure if that actually has anything to do with solving things...

There's a manga called QED, I think it'll be good if it's adapted into anime...

Wow, thanks a lot you guys!
I searched for "Meitantei Holmes" and what came up was a children's anime starring dogs as the characters. Very cute, I think it's worth checking out. Thanks a lot, Kentaru! (And wow, I never knew Poirot and Marple were turned into anime!)
I already know Death Note now, and I'm going to keep looking for the rest you mentioned.
Thank you again!

Try to buy Hajime Kindaichi Manga (since you wont find to read it online) You will fell in love with it.. Tantei Gakuen Q/Detective Academy Q or sort kind is the same author with Kindaichi Manga but it still cant beat Kindaichi Case..^^
For Death Note, I recomended you to read the manga and not watch the anime cuz the anime has a cut scene. You know the scene that has in manga but not in anime.

Hmm and the Clamp School Detectives? But the mysteries aren't hard core...
What else? *thinks*

There's one I've seen around called something along the lines of Kindachi Files, but it never grabbed my attention like DC did. [/font]

I've seen a few episodes of kindaichi but it didn't really grab my attention as you said^
If ur interested in this genre, i'd recommend Kurosagi. i dont no if there's an anime version but if u liked Death Note I think u'll like Kurosagi too, and probably Liar Game as well. they're both adapted from manga.

Another series would be Majin Tantei Nougami Neuro. It really doesn't have any good mysteries at the beginning, but starting at about episode 8-9, they become actually solvable. (you'll see what I mean in the episode involving Godai's old masters.)
