Hellos...
I'm new here, but I've visited this forum several times already. Anyway, as I'm planning my next anime convention costume, I couldn't think of a better place than here to get help in a problem I'm having...
You see, I'm planning to be Kaitou Kid next time. Now, I have a white suit, the shirt, pants and so forth, but I still lack the two most important parts of his outfit, the hat and cape.
Since top hats (white ones especially) are incredibly expensive to buy, I'll have to make my own. Does anyone have a suggestion as to what material would look good for a top hat?
Secondly, his cape... My suit, unfortunately, are one of those microfiber ones, meaning I can't poke or sew anything on or the holes would never recover. Any idea how I can attach a cape to the shoulders? I'm thinking using strong tape, but I am unsure whether tape would stain white clothing as well.
Suggestions, comments, etc. anyone?

Oh, I have Kid's monocle and the rest of his costume well in hand, so no worries there! I'm just not sure what would be the best materials to make the hat and how to attach his cape. I've been thinking getting a real hat for base, then plastic lining the inside for the shape. My problem presents itself when I get to the outer layet... Felt, velvet (I don't think so), or just normal cloth? As to the rest, the blue shirt, shoes, pants, gloves, tie... I got all that already. I doubt I'll have time to make his gun though.

hat - i think you could use normal white cotton cloth or silk(?) and do what chugoku-jinko suggest gun - buy a normal toy gun and paint in white. use cardboard to add extra details (?) cape - you wanna it to be temperary or permanent? although it would look like the original( i might say at all), you could stuff the cloth under the suit...wait, bad idea...maybe you just have to sew it on...

That's the problem...
How to attach a cape when I cannot sew/pin it onto the suit iteself? The suit I have is more or less new, so it'll be a bad idea to completely ruin it for the purpose of cosplaying, even if it isn't a 100 dollar suit.
Do you really think lining the hat in silk would look right? I would't mind looking for silk like material if that would appear like the real thing, but I'm not sure if Kid's hat is silk.
*Grins* And Kid's gun is blue.

Hat: it's silk.
Gun: well, the color depends on what picture you're looking at, really. From the anime, it's blue in episode 219 (and movie 3?), and silver in movie 8 and the Crystal Mother OAV.
Cape: only thing I can think of is get some really strong magnets... put one under the suit and the other in the little thingies where the cape is secured.

amtgard.com:8080/how2toph.pdf-is a PDF on how to make a top hat outta felt. You could prolly make it out of something heavier/stiffer or cover it to make the usual Kid's hat shape. Hmm... I tried magnets to do the chain thigie for the Bleach ghosts and that didn't work so well. First time I ran it fell off. What about attaching the cape to the shirt under the coat and have it coming out of the collar? Or have the coat hide how the cape is attached-?It's not quite accurate, but it could be one way to attach it.

Yes!!! Magnets! That never even occured to me! That FITS so very well! If the magnet used was strong enough ie: the magnets inside large stereo speakers, then it might work. Problem is how to hide the bottom part because the bottom one would be under the suit and not thick. Is it possible to use a metal board underneath like that?
Icka, what type of magnets did you use?
I still believe I'll skip out on the gun, but now that you pointed it out, you're right. The gun is multicolored. Hmmm.
As to the top hat... I think I know that one. My friend sent me the same site. I'll use a plastic base to make it stiffer.

i doubt u'll find magnets strong enough to hold it when you're running or during windy moments, unless you walk every carefully. an electronic magnet might be powerful enough...but you might get an electric shock or something ( bio and chem student - know physics like the tip of the biggest iceberg in the world)

I used heavy duty fridge magnets, several of them. -and like I said, it couldn't hold a small length of plastic chain. ;_;

Nah, fridge magnets are never enough. But you are right though, I tested it out for mine and it didn't work either.
I had one of those palm sized heavy electronic magnets. A suit and two cloth layers were too much even for those magnets. It could stick, but it won't stay. Not to mention, the cloth caused it to be slippery and it slid right off with a shake.
I guess I'm back to square one.

No worries, Seph. Velcow(sp?), remember? You can find it in white at any Wal*Mart/Local craft store, and is temporary/permanant. Don't worry about the sticky backing, because you can just as easily get Iorn Ons. There you go!
Hmm. Well, there are several realistic toy guns out oon the market. Several would work, but you'll have to talk to Icka about the clover on the barrel, and what side it's on. You could either scratch or paint it on, or just forget about it entirely, as it's not always present.
Edit: Oh, and welcome to the community.

Sankyu for the welcome!
And no, the problem is, no needle, tape, sticky whatever, can touch the surface of the jacket. Unless I'm sure it won't leave any marks on the white surface.
I think I've settled for velcro and attaching it at the seams of the jacket. It should work... I hope. I actually haven't tried it out yet.
As to that gun... I'm going to make my own. Out of wood. I bought a silver one for backup but it looks nothing like Kid's fancy shooter.
