Yes, I personally think it was a waste of time. The names are..reasonable, but Jimmy reminds me of this friend I have -o-;..the voices are very different, and when the people talk they dont put enought expression into their voices, it seems so dead and dull. Come on, if you were to scream, scream like you mean it. Hmmm, I dont know about where you guys live, but the opening and ending songs of the dubbed version suck, How come they kept the songs for Fullmetal Alchemist, Inuyasha, and all those other anime's? I think thats not fair >_>;..
Thats just what I think though.

Being an American I have to say that I naturally prefer the dub names. They only sound natural to me. When I have read translated scans or watched subs the names (not of reoccurring characters) sometimes confuse me

Really?? Well, what's the example? I think some of them are still same... The one that change the name is Mandarin Version! (Because i've seen the Mandarin version one's.. I've seen that too~~ in china, they NEVER change the original name of the character in meitantei conan and the other anime or dorama from japan! that's the truth! So, why their name sounds different from the original one ( no dub ) because chinese pronounce the kanji from the character's name on their own way~~ ^^ For instance, Kanji of ' Haibara ', even in japanese it pronounced haibara, but in chinese it pronounced HuiYuan, but they have the same kanjis by the way! chinese and japanese have a different pronunciation in kanjis EVEN the kanjis are the same~~ ;D That's little of my explanation~~ ;D

My point is that what works for Detective Conan outside the states does not really work for the American audience. The original names and the original songs (some i don't even know they can use the japanese as they may be copyrighted) are not for this audience. IMO, I feel the american VA's do a better voice job than the japanese VA's. I think they have a more real feel to them. However, I can not say the Japense VA's do a lackluster job as I do not know the language. Lastly, I am glad they made an english version.
