| | Differences between the anime and manga. « Thread Started on Oct 22, 2009, 4:19pm » | |
For the most part the anime is a faithful adaptation of the manga, but like other animes there are going to be some differences. So I thought we could list every known story differences whether major or minor. I'm fully aware of some differences, but I'm likely to have missed some differences just the same (I don't count episodes airing out of order unless they have an anime exclusive moment. The Haunted Mansion Murder Case for instance is the first manga appearance of Genta, Ayumi and Mitsuhiko, but other than that, there is no anime exclusive scene).
To start with the obvious ones:
1. The Roller Coaster Murder Case: A. The man at the beginning kills his wife, not a friend/parter. B. Shinichi's pervertness is downplayed here as his face doesn't end up under Ran's dress. C. In the anime, this story features the first appearance of Kogoro and Agasa, whereas the manga, they appear in the second story. D. Genta, Ayumi and Mitsuhiko are introduced in the anime version of the story, and are shown trying to get on the roller coaster. E. Shinichi actually has a camera when spying on Vodka, whereas the anime, he simply just listens to the deal going on.
2. The Kidnaping of a Company President's Daughter Case: A. The younger Shinichi is in a medical center at Tropical Land whereas in the anime he runs off after being awoken by the police. B. Rather than showing Conan being introduced to his new class (with Genta, Ayumi and Mitsuhiko as students), the manga version of the story end with Conan reflecting on how he is incapable of fighting the bad guys in his younger form.
3. An Idol's Locked Room Murder: A. Genta, Ayumi and Mitsuhiko introduce themselves to Conan and follow along on the case.
4. Aka Oni Mura Fire Festival Murder Case: A. In the anime, this was simply another mystery. But in the manga, this episode sets up Conan being in school, as well as introducing his newly created shoes (which he tries while playing soccer while at the grade school soccer field).
5. The Strange Person Hunt Murder Case: A. One difference, but greatly and most well known. Gin and Vodka are the master minds of the case, and they end up killing Akemi Miyano who informs Conan of the organization's existence. The anime simply ends with Conan defeating the mastermind known as Okita, and Akemi lives. As a result, the anime had to redo this story to set up Haibara's appearance.
6. The Case of the Once-A-Month Present Threat A. The anime version of the episode start out with Genta, Ayumi and Mitsuhiko asking Ran about Shinichi, which prompts her to think about him and setting up the story. In the manga, this story takes place after the Luxury Liner Serial Murder Case, as Ran gets a letter from Natsue who mentions that she and Takeshi are living a more quiet life on the ranch. Natsue tells Ran to give her regards to her "detective boyfried", which sets up the story.
7. The Shinkansen's Bomb Case: A. Unlike the anime, Conan does actually bump into the men who poisoned him and learned their codenames. Unlike the previous story which was later retconned into the anime, we never see Conan learning their codenames. B. Genta, Ayumi and Mitsuhiko appear in the anime version. And it's Ayumi who deposit's the gum that Conan uses to spy on the men wearing black. C. The manga version obviously doesn't have Gin and Vodka being apprehended and has Conan reflecting on the fact that he knows their codenames. The anime ends with Ran asking about his true identity, which the three kids respond by say "a smart prank".
8. The Case of the Coded Map of the City: A. An entire portion of the story is left out where Ran take Conan, Genta, Ayumi and Mitsuhiko to Toto Tower. During which she recalls a time when she and Shinichi visited the tower and when he bought her a cold drink, which he put up to her cheek. Conan does the same thing, which prompts her to ask him about his true identity (as the manga version takes place after the bomb case). Conan responds by stating that he is Kamen Yaiba.
That is all I can find at the moment.

Perhaps only the early stories were changed then. Regardless, I recalled some more:
The Roller Coaster Murder Case (left one out): - The friend of the murderer points out that Gin and Vodka could have committed the murder as they were behind the victim. Shinichi acknowledges that they look suspicious, but if they pulled off the murder, they would have anticipated the arrivial of the police (which they don't of course since they are in a hurry to pull off the transaction). A Karaoke Bar Murder Case: - This episode takes place right after Mountain Villa Murder, with Ran bringing up Sonoko's deduction of the case. Conan is worried as his cover might be blown, only for Sonoko to accept the credit for solving the murder. The scene as a whole doesn't appear in the anime. - The manga reveals that Tatsuya was rude to his band, because he didn't want them to miss him after he left. - The anime ends with Ran receiving her present, whereas the manga ends with her trying to find Shinichi (while Conan is shown, nervously hiding).
